The Foundation for Safer Athletic Field Environments (SAFE) was created in December of 2000 to provide research, educational programs and scholarships geared to the sports field profession. SAFE is the charitable arm of the nation’s only association for the sports turf industry – the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA). The close relationship with STMA provides an excellent perspective on the needs of today’s sports turf managers. At the same time, STMA’s sports turf managers and educators are the experts in the industry and will be capable of leading our research and education efforts.
As a relatively young foundation, we rely on ground level support from STMA, its members and from industry. STMA gifted $100,000 to SAFE to help establish it as a viable organization to provide financial security, and this endowment remains untouched. The level of scholarship funding has steadily increased since the Foundation began awarding scholarships in 2003; to date, it has funded a number of scholarships and educational programs totaling more than $250,000. SAFE has much greater aspirations in the area of providing public outreach and education.
Mission: To enrich communities through championing safe, sustainable sports and recreation fields for all athletes.
